You may be thinking about doing some gardening as the weather improves. A simple environmentally friendly thing to do is to make sure you use peat free compost. Over two million cubic metres was sold or used in the UK in 2019 – most imported from the Republic of Ireland and other EU countries, with the remainder coming from peatlands in the UK.
Why should you go peat free?
• Healthy peatlands trap a huge amount of carbon – helping to fight climate change
• They help to control flooding
• They provide a valuable habitat for plants and animals
• They are rare and unique, renewing at only 1mm a year
So next time you visit a garden centre be sure to look for a ‘peat free’ label.
