Microplastics are tiny plastic particles. Officially there are two types – primary and secondary. Primary microplastics are tiny particles designed for commercial use, such as cosmetics, as well as microfibres shed from clothing and other textiles. Secondary microplastics are particles that result from the breakdown of larger plastic items, such as water bottles.
Microplastics are all around us and scientists are only just beginning to understand the impact on the environment, wildlife and on human health.
Here are a few suggestions to help reduce your microplastic contribution:
1. Avoid products with microbeads and liquid polymers – this article has lots more information – https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/health-beauty/latest-microbeads
2. Buy clothing made of non-synthetic material and air dry your clothes
3. Avoid as much plastic as possible!
